Welcome, Chelsie and Charlie!
Just Bach is pleased to announce that Chelsie Propst and Charlie Rasmussen are joining the Leadership Team alongside Marika Fischer Hoyt and Alan Muirhead. Marika, one of the founders of Just Bach, will be on sabbatical for most of the 2021-2022 season.
Chelsie Propst has already stepped in as the new Artistic Director on the vocal side, successfully completing a grant application for an August 1 deadline, helping to plan the next season, and identifying vocalists. She is an active performer and musicologist based in Madison. She regularly sings with several early music ensembles based in the Midwest, such as the Mirandola Ensemble, La Grande Bande, the Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble, and the Madison Bach Musicians. Chelsie was also a member of the Rose Ensemble and can be heard on the album Christmas in Baroque Malta. She has performed many of Bach’s major works and cantatas with various groups around the country.
Charlie Rasmussen has agreed to become the new Interim Artistic Director with responsibilities for instrumental activities, including helping to finalize programming, contract any remaining needed players, schedule rehearsals and performances, and perform in the concerts as needed. Charlie is no stranger to Madison audiences, performing frequently with Just Bach, Sonata a Quattro, and Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble. Currently a cello faculty member at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee, Charlie is is helping to plan Just Bach’s upcoming season, and will join the performing ranks beginning in December. As previously stated, Marika Fischer Hoyt will be in Germany on sabbatical for most of the coming season; Charlie will take on many of Marika’s responsibilities in her absence.
Violist Marika Fischer Hoyt maintains a demanding concert schedule, and has performed across the U.S., and in Germany and Hungary. She plays with the Madison Symphony Orchestra and Ancora String Quartet (which toured Germany in 2018) on modern viola, and with the Madison Bach Musicians, Handel Aria Competition, Sonata à Quattro, Great Lakes Baroque, and Bach Collegium of Fort Wayne, IN, on baroque viola. She also serves as Artistic Director of the annual music festival, Bach Around The Clock. During her four-year tenure as music host on Wisconsin Public Radio, Marika devoted one show each December to Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, broadcasting and giving commentary on many different recordings of this work.
A retired chemist and technical writer, Alan Muirhead has sung in choirs all his life and has been a member of the American Recorder Society since the 1970s. He currently serves on the Advisory Board to the Madison Early Music Festival (MEMF) and is on the board of Piffaro, the Renaissance Band. Alan is also co-host of Musica Antiqua on WORT, where he plays music from early chant up through J. S. Bach. Alan joined the Just Bach leadership team in 2020 and acts as treasurer.
